In the 1800s, most Americans painted their walls white. Only wealthy people had color in their rooms because colored paint was very expensive. Today, color is accessible to everyone and it can make a room come alive.

• Red, blue, purple and salmon are all part of the new trend in design today--decorating with intense colors. After a period of designing rooms with no color in them, the pendulum is now swinging in the opposite direction.
• The main goal is to give a room a new look. To refresh your environment by turning from the neutral palette is a great way to add spirit to a space and give things their own personality.

One of the most spirited colors is red. In this room, deep red walls do more than just add color (figure A). They create a mood that brings down the brightness of the surroundings, giving a feeling of being encompassed by the room. They also set the more neutral furniture off.

No longer a pale pastel, yellow is now sunshiny bright. The trick is selecting upholstery and accessories to match the walls. Find a painting or floral/patterned chintz that combines different bright colors and use that as a guideline.

Strong color isn't necessarily stimulating. The forest green walls in this master bedroom blend beautifully with mahogany furniture (figure B). The contrasting colors are comfortable because they're found in nature all the time.

Dark colors recede. When a room is painted a dark to medium color, it will actually make the room look larger rather than bringing the walls in, which is a common concern.

You don't need to commit to painting the walls intense shades to have a room all about color. The walls in this kitchen/living room are white but it's definitely colorful (figure C). Painting the various colors found in the furniture behind a wall of bookshelves creates a theatrical backdrop for favorite pieces.

Trim a colorful sheet with ribbon and open the top seam to hang them on a rod as an inexpensive window treatment (figure D). They make a bold statement and are effortless to make.
